Are there teaching jobs out there?

Over the last couple of years many students have been voicing their concerns regarding the likelihood of gaining full-time employment after they have completed their probation year. I also recently received a query about job prospects from a concerned applicant who has not been interviewed yet.

So I visited the Times Educational Supplement jobs site. Now this isn't the most scientific form of data collection but it gives a reasonable picture. I searched for specific secondary subject jobs that were not promoted. These were all the newly advertised jobs in Scotland on TES.

TES Vacancies - 30/5/8

I suspect this is a topic I will return to from time to time...

Kenneth, I can never get your stories to appear in your RSS feed!

The situation for probationers seems to be pretty dire. We have 6 in our school - one with a job so far. When I was looking for a job (back in 2005) they were thin on the group for Computing and it seems to still be this way. As was the commentary on this news in the media - a lot of people are going to drift back to other jobs...

Not sure about the RSS, but I have now set it to full and I have it in Vienna so it does work. Try this:

The TES this week revealed statistics gathered by the GTC which suggests 74.2% of secondary teachers in April of their 1st year after probation had permanent posts.

I think the issue I'm trying to raise is that there is a lot of pessimism amongst probationers and student teachers. This seems to be based on anecdotal evidence rather than statistics.

When I started teaching in 1993 I got a 0.8 temporary contract for the 1st year of my probation which was then made full-time permanent October of the following year (which I was interviewed for and successful gained).

There are issues about staffing levels in relation to Computing and I hope to write something about it in the near future.
